Our Bedside Tool for Nurses

Since 2017, AppIC has been the application designed by healthcare professionals for healthcare professionals to provide state-of-the-art evidence-based practices in critical care nursing.
Easily accessible and user-friendly, AppIC is currently being updated by expert Nurses & Allied Healthcare Professionals within ESICM. In addition to adult Critical Care Nursing content, it will include paediatric, neonatal and physiotherapy content.
ESICM offers direct funding to researchers in the field of Intensive Care Medicine. Intensivists working in all areas of the discipline are invited to apply by submitting their proposed research projects.

SHINE is an international Delphi study that brings together ICU nurses worldwide—including those in bedside, research, educational and specialist roles—to explore how professional nursing roles may evolve by 2030 and beyond. The study aims to inform workforce planning, policy development and professional education in intensive care nursing by analysing anticipated future roles and building international consensus.
Thirty‑nine belief statements were developed through a rapid literature review and a focus group with ten ICU nurses from eight European countries. These statements, reflecting potential future roles for intensive care nurses, form the basis of the Delphi questionnaire. The survey questionnaire has been translated and piloted in nine languages: English, French, German, Greek, Italian, Dutch, Spanish, Polish and Portuguese. The first recruitment call has already attracted a diverse sample of ICU nurses from Europe, North America, South America, Africa and Asia.
We anticipate conducting three Delphi rounds. Our aim is to start recruitment for the first round by 9 March 2026. All ICU nurses currently working in any type of ICU, in any country, are invited to participate. ICU nurses who complete all three Delphi rounds will be entered into a lottery for 12 free registration places for ESICM’s Annual Congress 2026.
Providing Optimum Support for children facing ICU bereavement Experiences
The POSIE Study uses experience-based co-design (EBCD) in two phases. Phase 1 involves an international survey and interviews with ICU staff to identify current practices and challenges. Phase 2 uses child-sensitive creative methods and interviews to collect qualitative data from bereaved children and their caregivers.
