Fellowship in management of Immunocompromised Patients

25 trainees and young specialist ESICM members from all over the world were invited to apply to participate in this innovative, 5-day programme.

The first edition of the ESICM NEXT Fellowship has geen a 5-day programme covering several aspects of management in immunocompromised patients through different clinical and teaching activities in prestigious European centres in September 2024.

This fellowship is free of charge (we cover up to 1.000€ for travel, food and accommodation) for trainees and young specialists!

The 25 selected candidates will also receive a free registration to attend the Nine-i meeting held in Paris on March 25 and 26 (Travel and accommodation costs for this meeting are not covered by ESICM)

Applicants for the fellowship in management of immunocompromised patients are eligible if all of the following apply:

Eligibility criteria for applicants

• ESICM NEXT member (Members of the Society ≤ 37 years of age).
• ESICM membership 2024 paid.
• A member cannot apply for a centre in the country he is currently working.

Selection process and selecting committee meetings

1st step: The ESICM Office will process applications, excluding those which do not meet the criteria or are incomplete (i.e. reference, uploaded files, etc.).

2nd step: The eligible forms will be reviewed and scored by the selecting committee as explained here.

3rd step: Selections will be announced in the following month.

Fellowship in ARDS

The second edition of this 5-day fellowship programme for ESICM NEXT members took place in 2022.

Participants have learn everything they have ever wanted to know about Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome Management, including Pathophysiology, epidemiology and outcomes, optimisation of mechanical ventilation modalities and concomitant therapies, monitoring of mechanically ventilated patients and prevention of complications, Extracorporeal support for severe ARF. 6 participants have been selected for each of the following centres/dates:

  • Berlin – Germany (Charite Universitätsmedizin Berlin) – 26-30 September 2022
  • Barcelona – Spain (Hospital Universitari Vall d’Hebron) – 19-23 September 2022
  • Paris – France (Hôpital Pitié-Salpêtrière) – 5-9 September 2022
  • Vienna – Austria (Medical University of Vienna) – 19-23 September 2022

Applicants for the Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome Management Fellowship are eligible if all of the following apply:

• ESICM NEXT member (Members of the Society ≤ 37 years of age)
• Resident in Europe at the time of application.
• A member cannot apply for a centre in the country he is currently working.

Fellowship in Best Practices in Advanced Haemodynamic Monitoring.

This 5-day fellowship programme for ESICM NEXT members took place in 2019.

Participants have learned everything they have ever wanted to know about Best Practices in Advanced Haemodynamic Monitoring, including athophysiology of shock, haemodynamic monitoring – Why, when for whom?, non-invasive and invasive haemodynamic monitoring, optimisation of fluid therapy and vasoactive drug use.

For the first edition of this programme, 7 participants were selected for each of the following centres:

Fellowship in Pain, Agitation And Delirium Management

This 5-day fellowship programme for ESICM NEXT members took place in 2022.

Participants have learned everything they have ever wanted to know about modern Pain, Agitation and Delirium (PAD) Management, including importance of adequate PAD management, an update on current practice guidelines and implementation of PAD in daily clinical practice. For the second edition of this programme, 7 participants have been selected for each of the following centres:

• ESICM NEXT member (Members of the Society ≤ 35 years of age or Members > 35 years, only if attending an intensive care training programme (dual/joint or standalone), or within 3 years after intensive care specialisation.)..
• Resident in Europe at the time of application.
• Trainee or Specialist in Intensive Care Medicine (all dual, joint, supraspecialty, standalone specialties may apply).
• A member cannot apply for a centre in the country he is currently working.

Fellowship in ARDS

This 5-day fellowship programme for ESICM NEXT members took place in 2018.

Fellowship in Infections in ICU: Modern Management

This 5-day fellowship programme for ESICM NEXT members took place in 2018.

They have learned everything they have ever wanted to know about infectious diseases and treatment in ICM,, including How to prevent infectious diseases in the ICU, an update on current diagnostic and treatment algorithms, direct insight into application in clinical practice. For the second edition of the programme, 6/7 participants have been selected for each of the following centres/dates: :

Infection management in ICM

Trainees and young specialist ESICM members from across Europe participated in the third edition of this innovative, 5-day programme. In total, 115 selected participants learned about the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases in clinical practice in the following European centres during 2014 –  2016:
