Pharmacology and pharmacotherapy Section
The pharmacology and pharmacotherapy section aims to achieve excellence in medication use, ensuring every intensive care patient receives optimized, personalized, and safe treatment delivered by knowledgeable healthcare professionals for the best outcomes.
Mission
The vision of the pharmacology and pharmacotherapy section is to:
Deliver excellence in pharmacology and pharmacotherapy; and foster a future where every intensive care patient benefits from optimised, personalised and safe medication. That is delivered by informed and empowered healthcare professionals so that patients can attain the best possible outcomes when they are in intensive care.
Specific aims and objectives of Section
- Deliver multiprofessional education in pharmacology and pharmacotherapy within ESICM and the wider intensive care community.
- Establish strong cross collaboration with other ESICM sections in the field of pharmacology and pharmacotherapy
- Lead research in the optimization of medication in the intensive care patient, including pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic principles into practice
- Develop and grow the clinical pharmacy workforce so that as many intensive care patients, as is feasible, receive the evidence-based benefits of clinical pharmacy activities
- Lead medication safety research and practice developments across intensive care and transitions of care
- Represent clinical pharmacists and pharmacy technicians in ESICM
- Develop an international communication platform to share clinical and pharmaceutical information that may not be in public domain e.g., ‘off-label’ intensive care medication practices
- Share best practices focusing on pharmacology and pharmacotherapy in critical care settings.
- Give input and lead where appropriate, in novel areas of intensive care medicine, including artificial intelligence, pharmacogenomics and sustainability in medication use
