Feeding, Rehabilitation, Endocrinology & Metabolism
Mission
The FREM Section’s mission for 2023-2025 is to lead collaborative, ESICM-endorsed research initiatives in the critical care field, with a specific focus on Feeding, Rehabilitation, Endocrinology, and Metabolism. Our core objectives include advancing scientific knowledge, advocating for evidence-based practices, delivering top-tier educational resources, and nurturing an inclusive and excellence-driven culture.
In addition to these goals, we are unwavering in our commitment to minimizing the environmental footprint of intensive care medicine through the promotion of a ‘Green ICU’ approach, championing sustainability as a core principle. We are equally dedicated to bridging generations within our community, fostering cooperation among seasoned intensivists and their younger counterparts, as well as collaborating with nurses, dietitians, and allied healthcare professionals to achieve our shared vision. Therefore, the FREM section focuses intensively on collaboration with other speciality sections and the N-AHP, NEXT, and Clinical Training committees.
The FREM section is a dynamic group gathering experts on the above topics. We meet at least 4 times a year to discuss, develop scientific and educational projects, and support colleagues in clinical research. Some recent achievements of the section – facilitated by ESICM endorsement – are:
- GUTPHOS: Currently ongoing prospective, multicenter study to validate the GastroIntestinal Dysfunction Score (GIDS) and describe prevalence, outcomes, and management of phosphate disorders in intensive care patients.
- COSMOGI: A modified delphi process to identify a core outcome set of daily monitoring of gastrointestinal function. Consensus has been found on 13 essential outcomes (results will be published soon).
- A comprehensive review of micronutrients in critical care (publication expected in 2024)
The FREM section spreads hot news on its topics of interest within the ESICM community via e-mail newsflashes.
The FREM section is involved in education by contributing to the annual ESICM LIVE congress organisation, the novel Nutrition Pathway, and highly cited publications. Prioritising interaction rather than stand-alone activities, the FREM Section engages particularly in joint speciality sessions within ESICM-LIVES, with topics presented by members of the section and other established investigators within our field.
All ESICM members interested in these fields, including members of other speciality sections, are welcome to participate in and contribute to the section’s activities: please contact the Section’s Chair for further information by mail or join our live and online meetings.
The next FREM Section meeting will be on Tuesday, 28 October 2025, from 13:30 to 15:00 in room BM2 – Ostersee BC of the International Congress Centre (Messegelände, 81823 München) in Munich.
