Aim of the ESICM Environmental Sustainability Task Force

The ESICM Environmental Sustainability Task Force is dedicated to fostering a culture of ecological responsibility within intensive care medicine. Its goals are to identify and mitigate the environmental impact of critical care practices while promoting sustainable advancements in healthcare.

Key Objectives

Assess Environmental Impact

  • Conduct thorough evaluations of the ecological footprint associated with intensive care medicine, including resource use, waste generation, and emissions.
  • Provide members with evidence-based insights into key areas of concern

Enhance Sustainability Among Members

  • Develop and share actionable strategies for environmentally friendly practices within ICUs.
  • Encourage energy efficiency, waste reduction, and the use of sustainable medical technologies

Sustainable Scientific Research

  • Promote research methodologies and projects that minimize environmental impact without compromising scientific rigor.
  • Highlight studies and innovations that contribute to sustainability in healthcare.

Policy Advocacy

  • Advocate for the integration of environmental considerations into ESICM’s policies, guidelines, and activities.
  • Influence broader healthcare policies to prioritize ecological sustainability.

Collaborative Efforts

  • Partner with other medical societies, industry leaders, and environmental organizations to share expertise and achieve shared sustainability goals.

  • Environmental sustainability in intensive care: the path forward. An ESICM Green Paper
    • At LIVES 2024, ESICM proudly launched the Green Paper on Environmental Sustainability, marking a significant step forward in addressing sustainability challenges in intensive care.

      This paper outlines practical strategies for reducing the ecological footprint of ICUs while maintaining high standards of care. Key areas covered include energy efficiency, sustainable procurement, and the creation of Green ICU Teams. The Green Paper serves as a comprehensive roadmap for ICU stakeholders, encouraging the integration of sustainable practices into daily operations without compromising patient care quality.
