The Infection (INF) section of the ESICM is dedicated to the understanding and treatment of infections in the practice of intensive care medicine. Infections are the commonest reason for ICU admission and the most typical complication of organ support. In addition, infections commonly lead to organ failure, driving the development of sepsis and septic shock and, as such, are at the heart of intensive care practice.
The INF section consists of members with a wide range of interests in the field of infection, including management of infectious syndromes such as pneumonia and intraabdominal infection, diagnostics and biomarkers, antimicrobial use, monitoring and stewardship, and infection control. Our mission is to organise education and facilitate research in the field of infections in critically ill patients. We are open to all ESICM members interested in infection management and welcome suggestions for new topics, projects and activities.
We work closely with the SIS section and are closely linked to working groups on pneumonia and antibiotics.

We work closely with the SIS section. The INF Section holds two meetings a year, one at the ESICM LIVES meeting in October and the second in spring.
The last INF Section meeting took place online on 26 April 2023.
