World Sepsis Day: stop sepsis, save lives!
World Sepsis Day 2024
On September 13th, we commemorate World Sepsis Day, an initiative launched in 2012 by the Global Sepsis Alliance, with ESICM as a dedicated member. The goal of this day is to enhance public awareness about sepsis—a life-threatening condition caused by acute organ dysfunction due to infection, affecting over 19 million people annually.
Sepsis poses a particular threat to vulnerable groups such as pregnant women, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems. In 2017 alone, nearly 49 million people were affected by sepsis. Survivors often endure long-term effects, collectively known as post-sepsis syndrome, which includes ongoing physical, cognitive, and psychological challenges. The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly increased the number of sepsis survivors, yet awareness of post-sepsis syndrome remains low.
Unfortunately, many are unaware that sepsis can be prevented through vaccination and proper hygiene. Early diagnosis and timely treatment are crucial in reducing mortality rates. ESICM has been dedicated to improving sepsis outcomes for over two decades through the Surviving Sepsis Campaign, an international collaboration with the Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM). This campaign unites global experts in a shared mission to enhance the recognition and treatment of sepsis and septic shock.
Since its inception in 2002, the campaign has developed guidelines for diagnosing, treating, and post-ICU care of sepsis, contributing to reducing sepsis-related mortality. However, more work is needed to educate the public about this syndrome. Together, we can fight and ultimately defeat sepsis.
