Empowering pharmacists for healthier futures

On 25 September, ESICM joins the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) and the global healthcare community in celebrating World Pharmacists Day.

In the ICU, pharmacists are far more than dispensers of medication — they are essential partners in clinical decision-making. From optimising antimicrobial therapy and managing complex drug interactions to personalising dosing in patients on ECMO or CRRT, ICU pharmacists contribute directly to patient safety and outcomes every single day.

This year’s theme — “Empowering Pharmacists for Healthier Futures” — resonates deeply with ESICM’s commitment to multidisciplinary intensive care. Through the Pharmacology and Pharmacotherapy Section, our educational pathways, and initiatives like AIRSPACE, ESICM actively supports the integration, education, and recognition of pharmacists as core members of the ICU team.

But empowerment means more than acknowledgement. It means investing in education, ensuring pharmacists can practise to the full extent of their expertise, and giving them the tools and recognition they need to make critically ill patients safer. When pharmacists are fully integrated into the ICU team, care is more precise, medication is safer, and outcomes improve.

On this World Pharmacists Day, ESICM celebrates the pharmacists who stand alongside intensivists, nurses, and allied health professionals at the bedside — and reaffirms its commitment to a future where every ICU patient benefits from their expertise.
