World Heart Day 2026

Heart disease remains the world’s leading cause of death, affecting one in three people globally. One in five will die prematurely. Yet most cardiovascular disease is preventable.

On 29 September, ESICM joins the World Heart Federation and the global health community in marking World Heart Day — raising awareness of the world’s number one killer under the continued theme: “Don’t Miss a Beat.”

The numbers are stark. High blood pressure often has no symptoms until a heart attack occurs. Half of babies born with congenital heart disease are not diagnosed at birth. And fewer than 20 countries worldwide have a standalone national plan to tackle cardiovascular disease. Too many warning signs go unrecognised. Too many lives are lost because we missed the beat.

In intensive care, the heart is at the centre of everything we do. From managing cardiogenic and septic shock to haemodynamic monitoring, fluid resuscitation, and post-cardiac arrest care, intensivists face the consequences of cardiovascular disease every day — often when prevention and early recognition have already failed.

But our role doesn’t stop at the ICU door. As a community, we have a voice and a responsibility — to advocate for earlier recognition, better systems, and stronger national strategies to tackle CVD before patients reach us in crisis.

See the signs. Protect the heart. Demand action.

ESICM is committed to advancing cardiovascular care in the critically ill — through the Cardiovascular Dynamics Section, our haemodynamics educational pathway, research, and evidence-based guidelines that support clinicians at the bedside every day.

On this World Heart Day, let’s remind ourselves: every heartbeat matters, and the best time to act is before the beat is missed.
