World Heart Day 2025

On this World Heart Day, we stand with the global community to raise awareness of cardiovascular disease, which affects millions of people every year. Cardiovascular disease remains a major challenge not only for public health but also in the most critical settings.

In the intensive care units (ICUs), cardiovascular complications such as shock, cardiac arrest, arrhythmias, or severe heart failure are among the most life-threatening conditions clinicians face. These complex cases demand immediate action, advanced therapies, and a coordinated, multidisciplinary approach.

The ESICM Cardiovascular Dynamics Section is at the forefront of these efforts, committed to advancing the science and practice of cardiovascular intensive care. Through its work, the section focuses on:

  • Driving research and innovation to better understand mechanisms of cardiovascular failure and to improve monitoring and treatment.
  • Developing and disseminating clinical guidelines to ensure evidence-based practice across ICUs worldwide.
  • Fostering collaboration and education, creating opportunities for clinicians to share expertise, exchange ideas, and learn from one another.
  • Improving patient outcomes by integrating new knowledge into practice and ensuring that the sickest patients receive the best possible care.

This World Heart Day, we highlight not only the burden of cardiovascular disease but also the extraordinary dedication of healthcare professionals who work tirelessly every day to save lives.

Together — through research, innovation, and collaboration — we can continue to push the boundaries of intensive care medicine, strengthen our collective response to cardiovascular disease, and strive for stronger hearts and healthier lives.
