Tribute

In memoriam

It is with great sadness that we learned of the death of Dr Jordi Mancebo Cortes on 6 August 2022.

Dr Mancebo was Director of the Intensive Care Unit at the Hospital de Santa Creu y Sant Pau in Barcelona. He has been an associate professor at the Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona and a visiting professor at the Mayo Clinic, Denver Health Medical Center, Loyola University of Chicago, National Institutes of Health Bethesda, Yale University School of Medicine, McGill University in Montreal and the University of Toronto, among others.

Thanks to multiple research stays at the Medical Resuscitation Department of the Henri Mondor University Hospital in Créteil and at the University Hospital of Montreal, he has been part of important international research networks such as PLUG. He was the author of numerous textbooks and more than 200 scientific articles. He was one of the most prominent researchers in the field of respiratory failure, invasive and non-invasive mechanical ventilation and ventilator weaning.

Throughout his life he was involved in several national and international scientific societies, including ESICM, where he was appointed to several positions: Treasurer, Chair of the Acute Respiratory Failure Section, Council Member and Executive Committee Member.

His commitment to the critical care community was recently recognised with the ESICM medal at the LIVES 40 conference in Madrid. His sense of friendship, his gentle and humane personality and his professional qualities have made him an inspiring example for young intensivists.

On behalf of the members of the European Society of Intensive Care and its Executive Committee, we extend our deepest condolences to his family and friends.
