Mechanical ventilation is one of the most common interventions implemented in the intensive care unit (ICU). Over half of the ICU patients are ventilated in the first 24 hours after ICU admission. Multiple modes of mechanical ventilation support provide air to the patient based on pressure, flow, and volume.  Although lifesaving, mechanical ventilation can be associated with life-threatening complications, and deciding on ventilation is a challenge for ICU physicians.
