Message from ESICM President

Dear Member,

It is with utter sadness, that I once again write to you, our members – this time following recent attacks in Paris, Africa, Turkey and now, a brutal series of attacks in my native country, Belgium.

Many innocent people have been affected and our hearts go out to the families and friends of those who were killed and injured in the bombings at the Brussels airport and at the metro station.

Brussels is the home of the ESICM office, which is very close to EU offices and to one of the bombing sites. I am relieved to report that all staff members and their families remain safe.

At this time, many of my Belgian colleagues at hospitals in and around Brussels are treating those who have been injured – many severely – in today's explosions. Their continued dedication and efforts in caring for lives once again highlights the important role of intensive care medicine and the professionals who work tirelessly at the bedside in hospitals across the continent in this, our modern reality.

Many thanks to all of you who have forwarded your heartfelt thoughts, these are greatly appreciated. We at ESICM continue to stand alongside those around the world in condemnation of this most recent tragic violence and loss of life.

Daniel De Backer
ESICM President
