International Day of Women and Girls in Science

At ESICM, we are immensely proud of the women within our society, who continuously lead groundbreaking research, drive educational initiatives, and achieve remarkable milestones that enrich our community. Their contributions exemplify the strength and impact of diverse voices in critical care and beyond.
2025 marks two pivotal milestones in the global journey toward gender equality and women’s empowerment: the 10th anniversary of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science (IDWGS) and the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action. While progress has been made, systemic barriers and biases continue to hinder women’s and girls’ full participation in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
Achieving gender equality in science is essential for building a better, more sustainable future. Breaking stereotypes, promoting inspiring role models, supporting women through targeted programs, and fostering inclusive environments are critical steps in closing the gender gap. Recognizing this, the United Nations has long championed gender equality as a cornerstone for economic development and the realization of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Equal participation in STEM is not just a matter of fairness but a vital driver of innovation and progress for all.
As part of this celebration, we spoke with inspiring women within our society to explore why increasing women’s representation in science is vital, how mentors and role models empower girls to succeed in STEM, and how incorporating diverse voices leads to innovative solutions for global challenges. Their stories and perspectives highlight the transformative power of inclusivity in shaping a better future for all.
Together, we continue to celebrate, support, and elevate the incredible women shaping the future of science and intensive care.
