World Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Week 2025: WHO calls for action
Act Now: Protect Our Present, Secure Our Future.
This week (18 – 24 November) marks World Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Awareness Week (WAAW), a WHO-led initiative to improve understanding of antimicrobial resistance and promote best practices that help prevent the further emergence and spread of resistant infections.
The WHO theme for 2025 is “Act Now: Protect Our Present, Secure Our Future,” emphasising the urgent need for coordinated, cross-sector action as AMR continues to impact health systems, food production, the environment, and global economies.
Despite increasing awareness, efforts, and investments remain insufficient to meet the rising burden of resistant infections. The WHO calls on governments, healthcare professionals, civil society, veterinarians, farmers, environmental sectors and the public to turn commitments into concrete, measurable action.
ESICM Commitment
As a leading organisation in intensive care medicine, ESICM strongly supports the WHO campaign and remains dedicated to providing our community with high-quality, evidence-based resources to strengthen antimicrobial stewardship in the ICU. In support of this mission, ESICM offers a range of valuable resources, including the AIRSPACE WebApp—a tool designed to help ICU healthcare professionals make informed decisions on antimicrobial selection and dosing. Additionally, ESICM provides educational resources through the ESICM Academy, hosts expert-led webinars on AMR, and offers comprehensive training programmes, such as the Sepsis, Severe Infections and Stewardship pathway, for more in-depth learning.
