Evolving changes in mortality of critical COVID-19
ESICM Talk: Episode 9
ESICM Talk is a new podcasts series on noteworthy intensive care topics for your learning!
In this episode, powered by the ICM Journal, Otavio Ranzani, ICM Associate Editor, interviews Fernando Bozza, among the authors of a multicenter cohort assessing COVID-19 patients in Brazil, the findings of which have been recently published in the ICM Journal.
Age, frailty and adjusted mortality of critically ill patients have progressively reduced over the course of the COVID-19 pandemic. The study found out that non-invasive respiratory support has been increasingly used and was independently associated with improved 30-day survival.
Future randomised trials are needed to determine if a management strategy based on early non-invasive support for respiratory failure improves outcomes.
