ESICM Research Awards 2021: Basic Science Award

Hear from our past awardees

The ESICM Research Awards are funded to enable both young and established investigators and clinicians to carry out basic or clinical research projects and develop, acquire, and apply advanced research procedures and techniques in the area of intensive care medicine.

Each week, some of our past ESICM Research Awards recipients will provide more information and details about their research projects and the single awards.

Dr Julius Grunow is a resident in the Department of Anaesthesiology and Operative Intensive Care Medicine at the Charité – Universitätsmedizin, Berlin (DE) and part of the Junior Clinician Scientist Programme of the Berlin Institute of Health.

An ESICM member since 2017, Dr Grunow has won the Best Abstracts Award at ESICM annual congress LIVES 2017 in Vienna and the Basic Science Award in 2020.

His research will investigate whether prehabilitation can counteract metabolic dysfunction and improve outcome in frail and non-frail ICU patients.

Watch the video to learn more about the Basic Science Award and Dr Grunow’s research project.
