ESICM guidance for fluid therapy
IV fluid conservation in the ICU
The European Society of Intensive Care Medicine (ESICM) has released a new compact guidance document to support ICU healthcare professionals in managing intravenous (IV) fluid therapy amid ongoing supply shortages. These shortages stem from the temporary shutdown of Baxter’s North Cove IV fluid production site in the U.S., affected by Hurricane Helene in September 2024. While production has since resumed, full replacement of supplies is not anticipated until January 2025.
With IV fluids now being redirected from Europe to the U.S., several European countries are facing critical shortages, and other suppliers are currently unable to fill the gap, heightening risks to patient care. The ESICM guidance provides practical strategies for fluid therapy and conservation, emphasising the importance of collaborative efforts to optimise stock usage and ensure fair distribution. Healthcare professionals are urged to implement these practices promptly to help mitigate the impact of this ongoing shortage.
