World Lung Day 2026
A lifetime of lung health
Every breath matters. Today, ESICM joins the Forum of International Respiratory Societies and the global health community in marking World Lung Day.
From healthy lung development in childhood to maintaining respiratory function in older age — lung health is a lifelong journey. And when that journey is disrupted by acute respiratory failure, ARDS, or critical illness, intensive care professionals stand as the last line of defence.
In the ICU, protecting the lungs is at the heart of what we do. Every ventilator setting, every decision to intubate or wean, every recruitment manoeuvre shapes a patient’s respiratory future far beyond the acute episode. The choices we make at the bedside today determine the quality of life our patients will have tomorrow.
ESICM is committed to advancing respiratory care through education, research, and evidence-based practice — from our educational pathways in Acute Respiratory Failure and Mechanical Ventilation to the science shared at LIVES and in the ICM Journal.
On this World Lung Day, let’s reflect on the role we all play — not only in treating respiratory failure, but in protecting lung health at every opportunity.
