New Editor-in-Chief for Intensive Care Medicine Experimental journal
Dr Sascha David Appointed Editor-in-Chief of Intensive Care Medicine Experimental (ICMx)
A distinguished leader in intensive care medicine and translational research, Dr Sascha David has been appointed Editor-in-Chief of Intensive Care Medicine Experimental (ICMx), marking a significant milestone for both the journal and the global intensive care community.
Dr David currently serves as Deputy Director of the Institute of Intensive Care Medicine at the University Hospital Zurich, one of Europe’s most research-intensive academic centres. A seamless integration of clinical leadership and scientific innovation uniquely characterises his career. In Zurich, he holds multiple key roles, including Clinical Head of Medical Intensive Care Units, Research Director of the Institute, and Assistant Professor for Sepsis Research at the University of Zurich.
His academic contributions are substantial, with over 130 original peer-reviewed publications, spanning both experimental (43%) and clinical (57%) domains. He maintains an h-index of 45 and has secured approximately €4.8 million in competitive research funding, underscoring his strong scientific impact and leadership.
Dr David brings extensive administrative and governance experience to his new role. He has held numerous elected and leadership positions in major scientific and clinical organisations. He has also contributed to European working groups and national guideline committees, demonstrating a strong ability to navigate complex scientific discussions, reconcile diverse perspectives, and facilitate evidence-based decision-making.
His extensive editorial experience further strengthens Dr David’s selection. He has served as a reviewer for several leading journals, including The Lancet Respiratory Medicine, Intensive Care Medicine (ICM), ICMx, AJRCCM, JAMA, and Nature. In addition, he currently holds an editorial role at Klinische Medizin – Intensiv- und Notfallmedizin and serves as an advisor to Critical Care.
Within ICMx, Dr David has played a pivotal role in shaping the journal’s direction. As Head of the Sepsis Section, he has overseen 156 manuscript submissions and successfully led thematic collections, including a notable series on “blood purification in sepsis.” In 2024, he additionally supported the journal as interim Editor-in-Chief during a sabbatical period, further strengthening his editorial leadership credentials.
Dr David’s appointment comes at a time when ICMx continues to grow as a leading platform for experimental and translational research in intensive care medicine. His combined expertise in clinical care, laboratory science, and editorial processes positions him well to enhance the journal’s impact and global reach.
