World Liver Day 2026

Solid Habits, Strong Liver

The liver is one of the body’s most essential organs. It filters toxins from the blood, processes nutrients from food, stores energy, and helps maintain the body’s metabolic balance. Yet liver disease is becoming an increasingly important global health concern.

World Liver Day offers an important opportunity to raise awareness about liver health across society and within the ICU community. Liver disease is increasing considerably worldwide, with metabolic syndrome affecting more than 30% of the population, although prevalence varies across continents. This growing burden means that healthcare professionals—including intensive care teams—are increasingly encountering patients with underlying liver disease. It is therefore essential to use this opportunity to educate the public and highlight how liver disease should be recognised and managed when such patients are in the intensive care units.

Each year, 2 million lives are lost due to liver disease, and around 1.5 billion people worldwide live with chronic liver conditions.

The encouraging news is that small, consistent lifestyle changes can make a meaningful difference.

ESICM joins the World Liver Day 2026 campaign, “Solid Habits, Strong Liver,” which highlights four simple but powerful habits that help protect liver health: eating a balanced diet, staying physically active, reducing alcohol intake, and undergoing regular liver health checks.

By making these habits part of everyday life, individuals can take control of their liver health and reduce the risk of serious complications. Together, let’s use World Liver Day to strengthen awareness, promote prevention, and support healthier lives—because strong habits build a strong liver.
