New ECMO Training & Research Programme

The new ESICM ECMO Training & Research Programme, supported by Getinge, is designed for intensivists and intensive care nurses with a strong interest in extracorporeal life support (ECLS/ECMO). The initiative combines structured training and collaborative research to strengthen clinical competence, improve patient care, and build cross-sector collaboration.
Participants who complete the ECLS/ECMO learning pathway and, ideally, attend practical workshops at LIVES are eligible to apply for fellowships. These fellowships offer bedside teaching at leading academic health science centres worldwide. Selection is based on performance, motivation, experience, and equitable representation, with travel and accommodation support included.
Fellows are encouraged to pursue research projects, with the most impactful proposal receiving €20,000 and support for consumables. The programme also features a dedicated networking event at LIVES 2026, creating opportunities for fellows, researchers, and experts to exchange knowledge and strengthen collaboration.
By combining advanced training through fellowships and research opportunities, the programme ensures that future leaders in intensive care are well-prepared to advance ECMO practice globally.
