In memory of Professor Rinaldo Bellomo

We are deeply saddened to share the news of the untimely passing of Professor Rinaldo Bellomo.
Professor Bellomo was a towering figure in the fields of intensive care medicine and critical care nephrology. A pioneer and founding father of critical care nephrology, he was widely recognised as one of the most influential scientific minds of our time. His contributions to research, science, and patient care were profound, and his passion for these pursuits was matched only by his love for his family.
In 2018, Rinaldo was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia in recognition of his distinguished service to intensive care medicine as a biomedical scientist and researcher—a distinction that held special meaning for him in his adopted homeland.
His legacy is vast and enduring. Generations of intensivists around the world have built successful careers shaped by his mentorship, guidance, and example. They remember him not only with admiration but with deep affection and gratitude.
Those who had the privilege of hearing him speak at conferences will remember his distinctive, unhurried style—often belying the depth and significance of his insights. Yet when engaged, he could summon his Italian heritage and respond with spirited passion and eloquence. Above all, he was known for his kindness—a quality instantly apparent to anyone who spent time with him.
With his passing, the ESICM and the global intensive care community have lost a giant. He leaves behind his beloved wife and daughter, and many grieving hearts around the world.
