Why is sepsis important?

Every year sepsis affects 3 million people in the European Union alone, and yet this terrible figure does not get to the headlines. Sepsis is the most severe complication of infection, and a leading cause of preventable deaths and disability in Europe. Every minute more than one person dies of sepsis in Europe and three-quarters of survivors suffer long-term sequelae. Sepsis can affect people at any age. Vaccination, clean care, early recognition and treatment of infection, are key to preventing sepsis.

What is sepsis ?

Sepsis is the body’s extreme reaction to an infection.

Sepsis is a life-threatening medical emergency caused by the body’s overwhelming response to an infection. Without urgent treatment, it can lead to tissue damage, organ failure and even death. When someone has an infection, the immune system works to try to resist it. But sometimes the immune system responds dysregulated to the infection and starts damaging normal tissues and organs.

ESICM and sepsis

Together with SCCM-Society of Critical Care Medicine, the ESICM organizes the leading guideline for managing sepsis at every stage. Currently a new update of the Surviving Sepsis Campaign Guidelines is under development and will be released early 2026.
