Surviving Sepsis Campaign: International Guidelines for Management of Sepsis and Septic Shock: 2016

INTENSIVE CARE MEDICINE

ESICM is pleased to present the 2016 edition of the Surviving Sepsis Campaign’s (SSC) practice guidelines in our official journal Intensive Care Medicine. These guidelines are an update of the 2012 Surviving Sepsis Campaign guidelines for the management of severe sepsis and septic shock and incorporate the new Sepsis-3 definitions for sepsis and septic shock. Of note, the 2012 guidelines have been accessed more than 130,000 times and cited over 1200 times.

The European Society of Intensive Care Medicine (ESICM) and the Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM) spearheaded the Surviving Sepsis Campaign more than two decades ago, and published the initial SSC guidelines in 2004 with the intention of providing guidance for the clinician caring for adult patients with sepsis or septic shock. Since the first publication, the guidelines have been updated in 2008 and 2012 and ESICM remains committed to the continual improvement of these guidelines which have had an influential impact on the care and outcomes of patients suffering from sepsis around the world by increasing the sharing of knowledge.
