Sepsis and infection make up the majority of the workload in most ICUs and are critical to intensive care practice. Alongside the management of the septic patient and infections, special attention will be paid to antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) and antimicrobial resistance (AMR). AMR is a global health threat, and multi-drug resistant organisms commonly cause infections in intensive care, whilst AMS sits at the heart of our bedside approach to severe infections. This learning pathway brings clinicians through from novices to well-trained and knowledgeable practitioners, equipped with the most up-to-date information as -crucially -the skills and ability to keep up to date as knowledge evolves.
Endorsement:
The pathway is endorsed by the Infection Section and the Systemic Inflammation and Sepsis Section, ESICM.

Overview
The pathway takes participants from a baseline level of knowledge and will systematically add skills and knowledge, with tailored on-line teaching and small-group discussion aiming to develop expert level practice on completion of the pathways. Whilst there is information, which is core to all practitioners, we will ensure that specialist interests are catered for allowing participants to develop in-depth understanding of specific topics.
It uses a blended approach to learning, using a combination of didactic learning, group-based interactive teaching and practical, bedside teaching. The programme proposes a sustainable digital transformation and will ensure that participants are empowered to enjoy the opportunities that come with the digital decade.
It includes:
- Kick off webinar on February 11, 2025, at 16:00 5CET)
- Level 1: Foundations in Sepsis and Severe Infections. It will include self-learning resources and assessments. It opens in January 2025 and remains open during the entire pathway.
- Level 2: Consolidating Clinical Practice. It will include:
- Self-learning resources and assessments
- Live event #1 (online): Consolidating clinical practice in Sepsis and Infections (March 25-26, 2025). Separate registration required. See below.
- Live event #2 (online): Consolidating AMS practice and addressing AMR (May 13-14, 2025). Separate registration required. See below.
- Fellowships. A total of 20 fellowships are offered to the top scoring participants in Level 1 and Level 2. This will be an opportunity for the participants who have achieved a sufficient level of both attendance and assessment performance to undertake fellowships in specific areas of infection and sepsis management, gaining bedside teaching from experts at globally renowned academic health sciences centres. Fellowships will last 1 week and will come with a bursary of 1000 EUR to support travel and accommodation at the site.
- Eligibility and applications for fellowships:
- Applications open to participants from any professional background
- Must be a member of the ESICM (so join up now if not already a member!)
- Fellowships will be awarded on basis of application, completion of Level 1 and 2, including the two live online events planned for Level 2, and highest performance in the quizzes.
- Priority will be given to those who did not benefit from a fellowship on the subject or any other fellowship in 2025
- Level 3: Developing Expert Practice. It will include:
- Self-learning resources and assessments
- Live event #3 (onsite): Developing expert practice in Sepsis, Severe Infections & Stewardship (pre-congress advanced course at LIVES, October 25-26, 2025). Participants will have the opportunity to join live discussions, manage complex cases, and tackle controversial topics with world leading experts on the topic. Up to 15 free entries to the course will be offered by ESICM to top performing participants in the pathway.
Registration requirements
Registration to the pathway is FREE of charge and will allow participants to study all the resources available. However, the participation to the live events requires separate registration. Capacity is limited and places will be booked on ‘first come first served’ basis.
