Although the crude rates and the incidence of ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) have decreased over time, VAP remains a serious issue in the ICU, as clinical and microbiological diagnosis are still difficult. Early and adequate empirical therapy and adherence to hospital treatment guidelines are associated with better prognosis. Current evidence demonstrates that de-escalation and shortening duration of antibiotic treatment is both beneficial for patients and decreases resistances. However, treatment failure overall remains frequent and is associated with a worse patient prognosis.

On Thursday 3rd March from 16.00 to 17.00 hrs (CET), this webinar will describe the current problems in diagnosis of VAP; the value of quantitative vs. qualitative microbiological cultures and blind vs. guided sampling. Drs. Antonio Torres and Pieter Depuydt will also provide participants with guidance on how to identify and to understand treatment failure in VAP, and discuss the rationale as well as the limitations of using VAP as an ICU quality indicator. A rational approach for selection of initial, empirical antibiotic therapy and how to translate the ATS-IDSA recommendations to your local hospital situation will also be addressed in this comprehensive session.

Participants will be provided with an opportunity to ask questions and discuss with the presenters for 30 minutes following the presentation.
