OPTIMISING ORGAN DONATION

IMPORTANT ELEMENTS TO CONSIDER 

From the ethical considerations to consent and transplantation, organ donation is an area clinicians where must tread carefully. In this Joint Session with EDTCO, top experts from a range of specialties will discuss a number of considerations for optimising patients at the bedside. 

Speaker Paul Murphy will start this session off with an overview of end-of-life practices relevant to organ donation in Europe and then the session will change focus to the physiological management of patients. Armand Girbes will focus on the preservation of organ function in the donor after circulatory death, followed by Giuseppe Citerio who will present: Brain death and progressive organ dysfunction: Timing for donation and how to interfere?

The ethical and practical considerations related to elective ventilation will be covered by Teresa Pont and Erwin Kompanje will explore the possible impact of mandatory organ donation in his presentation concluding this joint session.

Participants can expect to walk away from this session with a better understanding of the plethora of factors influencing organ preservation and transplantation and be familiar with a multitude of useful measures to optimise all aspects of organ donation.
