Co-Principal Investigators John Laffey and Giacomo Bellani discuss the aim and rationale for their new multi-centre, prospective, observational study: WEAN SAFE (WorldwidE AssessmeNt of Separation of pAtients From ventilatory assistancE). This 4-week inception cohort study from the ESICM Trials Group is being organised by the Acute Respiratory Failure section and aims to assess the management and spectrum of approaches to weaning from invasive mechanical ventilation.
