THE JOINT ESICM/ATS/ERS/SCCM/SRLF CONSENSUS CONFERENCES
International Consensus Conferences (ICC) are organised jointly by the ESICM with the American Thoracic Society (ATS), the European Respiratory Society (ERS), the Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM)and the Société de Réanimation de Langue Française (SRLF).
The purpose of a Consensus conference is to produce an informed debate on a limited subject presented in the form of 5 main questions, with the aim of evaluating available scientific information and to advance understanding of the issue in question. It consists of a two-day conference, during which experts from different disciplines and/or from different schools make short presentations, aimed at answering the 5 questions previously defined by the Scientific Advisors. Prior to the conference, the jury, made up of 11 non-experts in the field, is provided with background documentation about the presentations to be made by the experts. After attending the Conference, the Jury meets up over two days, in order to prepare a Consensus Statement on the issues raised. The Consensus text may then be published by the 5 organising Societies.
The 11th ICC will take place in Puerto Rico in 2009 on the topic "Therapeutic hypothermia: To cool or not to cool". The SCCM will organise this conference. Please check on SCCM website for further details at www.sccm.org.

Continuing Medical Education / EACCME. The 10th ICC has been accredited by the European Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (EACCME) to provide CME activity for medical specialists. The EACCME is an institution of the European Union of Medical Specialists (UEMS). The EACCME and the FISM CME have granted 12 Italian/European CME credits (ECMEC) to the Conference.
Each medical specialist should claim only hours of credit that he/she actually spent in the educational activity.
EACCME credits are recognised by the American Medical Association towards the Physician's Recognition Award (PRA). To convert EACCME credit to AMA PRA Category 1 credit, contact the AMA.
