For this meeting, the format has changed to allow us to address two issues of strategic importance to intensive care practice in Europe and beyond.
- The first of these is to establish the incidence of and burden from severe acute respiratory infections in the ICU.
- Given the impact of viral and bacterial infections on ICU patients and resources across the world, there are a number of national and international initiatives currently underway to address this important problem, including several under the InFACT (International Foundation of Acute Care Triallists) collaboration, of which the ESICM TG is a part. We believe that a rigorous, rolling observational study to describe this problem within Europe and beyond (cooperating with other similar international exercises) will provide important data to help define the problem for practitioners, funding agencies and health systems, and to inform potential interventional studies. We hope to agree the basis of such an observational study in Rimini, and form the core of a Steering Committee to deliver the project on behalf of ESICM. We have secured the attendance of a number of experts, as well as representation from our Sections, to inform the discussions, but we welcome and invite the attendance of interested members of the Society who wish to become involved, whether as contributors to the discussion or potential members of a study steering group.
- The second question we wish to consider relates to the question of the use of SDD in Europe. In spite of the study data, this approach has not been widely accepted into practice. Given its potential importance, and the expertise that exists within Europe, we wish to consider if and how the ESICM TG might support an initiative to help address this key issue. Once again, we shall have a number of experts in the field to assist us, but invite interested members to join us and become involved.
The meeting has also provided an update on current projects already being progressed by the Trial Group:
- DALI, J. Lipman
- CARS, D. Annane
- Pallicus, E. Azoulay
- Feasibility of use of functional hemodynamic variables in hemodynamic management, D. De Backer
