Technology Assessment and Health Informatics
Aims and Missions
This section plays a regular role in the ESICM by contributing to the major meetings. The section holds its annual meeting at the ESICM congress. From 1999-2003 the section has held precongress workshops in conjunction with industry and has covered technology assessment of Monitoring and Organ Support and in 2002 moved in the direction of Health Informatics. As a result the section changed its name in 2004 from ‘Technology Assessment (TA)’ to ‘Technology Assessment and Health Informatics (TAHI)’ .The Section has now published 6 monographs based on these precongress workshops, and in addition has contributed a PACT module on Technology Assessment.
At the congress in Amsterdam 2003 the precongress workshop covered the subject of Medical Error and the role of Health Informatics. This followed on from a successful well-attended thematic session in Barcelona in 2002 on Medical Error. There was no precongress workshop before the Berlin meeting but a workshop was run before the Amsterdam congress in 2005 in conjunction with Industry. The subject of this workshop was ‘Therapeutic Beds’. This proved a great success involving 5 industry representatives, 3 nurses, 1 physiotherapist and 6 doctors; it was a truly multi-disciplinary and multi-national clinician/industry interactive workshop. The monograph from this workshop was published and available in time for the recent Barcelona meeting. In Barcelona, we ran a workshop with industry on Temperature regulation. This was followed in Berlin in 2007 by a very useful workshop on Information technology again and we had input from 5 companies.
Our contribution to the Barcelona meeting in 2006 included an examination of situations where non-invasive technology can replace invasive technology, tissue perfusion, telemedicine, early warning systems and clinical decision support. Our main thematic session looked at “How to assess technology”. We also ran a joint session with MENN on the subject of Glucose control . We repeateded the "How to assess technology" session in Berlin 2007 and were honoured to have Susanne Ludgate the medical Director of the MHRA in the UK contributing to our session.
