Update on Recent Activities
Key recent ARF section activities include the recent Consensus Conference to revise the definition of ALI/ARDS. This project, jointly supported by ESICM and the American Thoracic society, was led by Prof Marco Ranieri. The Consensus Conference took place in Berlin in advance of the recent ESICM annual conference. Prof Ranieri presented the proposed revised ARDS definition at the ESICM conference. These new criteria should increase the specificity and sensitivity of the diagnosis of ARDS, and prove a useful tool for clinicians and researchers alike. We await the publication of this definition in the near future.
A second key achievement was the Summer School Update on Mechanical Ventilation, held in Turin on June 23rd – 25th. This conference was well attended, had an excellent faculty and was a great success.
The congress programme for Lisbon 2012 has been planned well in advance, and the Chair and Deputy chair wish to thank the section members for their very constructive input to the call for session proposals.
