Educational Courses
EDIC Preparation Course
The Congress Committee, in conjunction with the Educational and Training Committee prepares a full educational track prior and during the ESICM Annual Congress. All sessions are devised as preparatory courses for participants sitting the EDIC written examination that will be held on Monday 15 October 2012 (9:00-12:00) during the ESICM LIVES 2012, Lisbon – CCL, Portugal.
ESICM Training Courses in Intensive Care
The main goal of the courses is to provide trainees in Intensive Care Medicine in Europe (and elsewhere) with a series of high quality educational courses to be used during the training period. ESICM primarily dedicates itself to developing and running instructor and provider courses in close cooperation with the National Societies of Intensive Care Medicine in Europe. It is the hope that in the future, these courses will gain further relevance within each individual country and operate somewhat independently with minimal oversight from ESICM.
We have two different levels of courses: Entry (BASIC) level (for trainees in Intensive Care Medicine) which are designed as introductory courses. For more experienced practioners, we have Advanced Training Courses in different areas of the field of Intensive Care Medicine (ATCIC courses).
The Department of Professional Development, specifically the Clinical Training Committee is responsible for the organisation of these courses.
BASIC - Basic Assessment and Support in Intensive Care
The BASIC course is a concept originally developed by the Chinese University of Hong Kong (see http://www.aic.cuhk.edu.hk/web8/BASIC.htm), and since has been endorsed by ESICM. It is a pure introduction course, intended for the beginner in Intensive Care Medicine. The course has been developed to include a written course book (can also be provided in PDF format for free), and utilises a standardised course method with short tutorials and skill stations. All tutorials are available free for course providers, and must be used as they are (in order to ensure equivalent content from course to course). There is also pre-and post-course test with MCQs and a pre-made web-platform for use by participants.
ESICM primarily uses this course to educate instructors and providers at national levels, an endeavor begun in Dublin in the Summer of 2010 in cooperation with the Irish Society of Intensive Care.
ATCIC - Advanced Training Courses in Intensive Care
ATCIC web page
ATCIC are one or two day advanced training courses linked to competencies defined in CoBaTrICE and PACT. The courses are designed for doctors training in intensive care and as a refresher for the intensive care specialist. The courses are interactive and include a combination of short lectures, small group tutorials, and practical workshops. To date, five advanced modules have been developed:
-Bronchoscopy
-Haemodynamic assessment and monitoring
-Management Skills in Intensive Care
-Mechanical Ventilation
-Intensive Care Nephrology
ESICM has run a number of ATCIC courses in collaboration with national societies since its launch in 2010. More modules are currently in development. ATCIC courses are available as an educational resource for members of ESICM to national societies. For further information, please contact ESICM's Education and Training Department.
