THE ESICM DIVISION OF SCIENTIFIC AFFAIRS

The Division of Scientific Affairs has a crucial role to represent the ESICM in the intensive care community. It’s main role is to advance and develop the ESICM scientific activities in relation with our Annual Congress and in fostering research. The Division of Scientific Affairs includes the following Committees and subcommittees:
 

  • The Congress Committee
  • The Research Committee with it’s subcommittees:
    • The Clinical Trials Group
    • The Metanalysis Group

 


The Congress Committee

is led by Jean-Daniel Chiche (Paris, France). The chair of the Congress Committee is also the Chair of the Division of Scientific Affairs.
 
The Congress Committee is composed of:

  • The Chairperson of the Division of Scientific Affairs (Chairperson of the Committee)
  • One representative from each Section (nominated/elected by the voting members of the Section)
  • The Chairperson of the Research Committee
  • The Chairperson of the Education & Training Committee
  • The N&AHP representative
  • Ex officio other committee Chairs or Officers.

 
Aims and Missions
The Congress Committee is responsible for the preparation and presentation of the ESICM Annual Congress, including its educational tracks composed of the Post-graduate courses, the Educational sessions, and the newly introduced Competency training sessions (in co-operation with the Education and Training Committee). The main job of the Congress Committee is to coordinate the proposals and activities of the Sections and their Research groups as well as of the other members. It is also responsible for the scientific design and content of other meetings organised jointly with other Associations, such as the Consensus conferences and the Summer conferences.

 

 


The Research Committee

is led by Daniel De Backer from Brussels, Belgium. The Chair of the Research Committee is the Deputy chair of the Division of Scientific Affairs.
 
The Research Committee is composed of:

  • Chairperson of the Research Committee
  • One representative from each Section (nominated/elected by the voting members of the Section)
  • The Chairperson of the Congress Committee
  • The Chairperson of the Education & Training Committee
  • One representative of the N&AHP Committee
  • Ex officio other committee Chairs or project leaders or Officers


Aims and Missions
The Research Committee is in charge of coordinating or advising on all research activities of the Society, be it the Section's Working Groups, the Surviving Sepsis Campaign, etc. It is most of all responsible for running the ECCRN, the European Critical Care Research Network. This network of projects is a platform whereby the ESICM endorses or supports a number of projects which it believes are of value for the progress of knowledge in intensive care medicine. Projects which would like to be endorsed or supported by the Society may contact the ESICM Office to receive the ECCRN package (rules and application form).

 


The Metaanalysis Group

is led by Djillalli Annane, France.

The Metaanalysis Group is composed of:

  • The Chairperson
  • The members of the committee are appointed through the Chairperson after application.


Aims and Missions
To facilitate education, research and professional development within the European Society. This unit will develop a strategy and system to commission, design and complete systematic reviews and meta-analyses.

 


The Clinical Trial Group

is led by Daniel De Backer from Brussels, Belgium.

The Clinical Trial Group is composed of:

  • The Chairman of the Research Committee chairs the committee, whose members are:
    • Five ESICM representatives:
      • The Chairperson of ESICM Research Committee
      • The Chairperson of the Division of Scientific Affairs
      • The Chairperson of the Ethics Section
      • Two active members of the Research Committee.
    • Five members elected from the ECCRN:
      • One methodologist should be included in the board
      • The Chairman of the Research Committee will chair the board.

 

Aims and Missions
The Clinical Trial Group is a subcommittee of the Research Committee. It will be open to any ESICM member, independent of a specific section. The activities will be restricted to trials and not involved in political issues.
