Instructions on how to apply for the 2009 ESICM & Industry Research Awards are available here. Here is the budget template.

Please note that only 2009 ESICM members (who have paid their 2009 fees) are invited to submit an application. If you are not yet a member, please apply early in 2009 as it can take several weeks to process (you need your member id to validate your award application form).

 THE ESICM ECCRN RESEARCH AWARDS

For more information on the ESICM ECCRN Awards programme, download the 2009 ECCRN Awards Overview, and see below for details on each of the available awards. Please note that only ESICM members are invited to submit an application.

 ESICM Young Investigator Award

The ESICM Young Investigator Award supports the development of research activities undertaken with the active contribution of the applicant. The specific intent is to provide support for young and talented physicians-scientists that have the potential to become outstanding independent investigators in the field of intensive care medicine and emergency medicine. The research proposal may rely on approaches ranging from basic cellular responses to outcome research, and may include clinical applications as well as translational science.

The Young Investigator Award allocates a grant amounting to 20 000€, which is fully funded by ESICM.
ESICM members aged less than 40 years are invited to submit applications.

ESICM ECCRN Clinical Research Award

The ECCRN Clinical Research Award supports a research project to be performed by an investigator in a clinical environment. Some aspects of the proposal may involve collaboration with research laboratories. However, applications that lack a clinical component will not be considered. Approaches may vary from physiology, diagnostic procedures, therapeutic interventions, to epidemiologic studies and evaluation of practices.

The Clinical Research Award allocates a grant amounting to 20 000,€ which is fully funded by the ESICM. The prize will be offered to 2 winners this year!

ESICM ECCRN Basic Science Award

The ECCRN Basic Science Award supports a research project to be performed by an investigator in a research laboratory. Approaches may vary from basic cellular and molecular physiology, cell biology, molecular biology and genetics to animal physiology and translational science.

The Basic Science Award allocates a grant amounting to 20 000€, which is also fully funded by the ESICM. The prize will be offered to 2 winners this year!

ESICM ECCRN Established Investigator Award

The ECCRN Established Investigator Award supports the research activities of a senior physician-scientist active in clinical or basic research. The specific intent is to provide support for investigators who already established their independed research programme in the field of intensive care medicine and emergency medicine, and who can demonstrate a commitment to facilitate research training of young colleagues. The research proposal may rely on approaches ranging from basic cellular responses to outcome research, and may include clinical applications as well as translational science.

The Established Investigator Award allocates a grant amounting to 20 000€, which is also fully funded by the ESICM.

ESICM ECCRN Levi-Montalcini Biomedical Sciences Award

In order to foster progression of women in academic careers, this prize supports the development of research activities undertaken with the active contribution of a female applicant. The specific intent is to provide support for young and talented female physicians-scientists who have the potential to become outstanding independent investigators in the field of intensive care medicine and emergency medicine. The research proposal may rely on approaches ranging from basic cellular responses to outcome research, and may include clinical applications as well as translational science.

The Levi-Montalcini Biomedical Sciences Award allocates a grant amounting to 20 000€, which is also fully funded by the ESICM.

THE ESICM INDUSTRY RESEARCH AWARDS

Objective

This programme aims to promote cutting-edge research related to intensive care medicine.

The Industry awards will provide an initial push to research activities undertaken by intensivists and will also grant the distinguished applicants with peer recognition and great exposure. Please note that only ESICM members are invited to submit an application.

Bernhard Dräger Award for Advanced treatment of acute respiratory failure

To qualify for the Bernhard Dräger award your research must be focussed on developing new knowledge related to advanced non-invasive respiratory monitoring and its application to the field of respiratory support. Proposals are to be centred on the evaluation, use or development of concepts, technologies or devices likely to improve the guidance of respiratory support for critically ill patients in intensive care and emergency medicine. The proposed research project has to have intrinsic importance, but could also contain a component for permitting the applicant to learn the methodology, theory, and conceptualisations necessary for developing into an outstanding independent researcher.

The Bernhard Dräger Award allocates a grant amounting to 15,000€. Call for proposals.

iMDsoft Patient Safety Research Award

The proposed research must focus on developing new knowledge related to patient safety. Approaches may vary from epidemiology to evaluation of practices and clinical outcomes. Proposals centred on the evaluation, implementation or development of novel information technologies likely to improve patient safety are encouraged. Translational research may be suitable if short-term clinical applications clearly relate to the field of patient safety. Proposed research must have intrincis importance, but may also contain a component for permitting the applicant to learn the methdology, theory, and conceptualisations necessary for developing into an outstanding independent researcher.

The iMDsoft Patient Safety Research Award allocates a grant amounting to 10 000€.

Please view the iMDSoft Patient Safety Award call for proposals.

A Hamilton Medical ESICM partnership Alain Harf Award on Applied Respiratory Physiology

The proposed research must focus on developing new knowledge related to respiratory physiology and its applications to the field of mechanical ventilation. Candidates are encouraged to develop the physiologic rationale of the proposed research. Proposals can however involve the evaluation, the use, or the development of concepts, devices and technologies likely to improve ventilatory support in intensive care and emergency medicine. The scope of the proposal is not limited to mechanical ventilation and may include any kind of biomedical device aimed at improving the delivery of respiratory support in the critically ill. Proposed research must have intrincis importance, but may also contain a component for permitting the applicant to learn the methdology, theory, and conceptualisations necessary for developing into an outstanding independent researcher.

The Hamilton Alain Harf Award on Applied Respiratory Physiology allocates a grant amounting to 10 000€.

Edwards Lifesciences Awards

Two awards are supported by Edwards Lifesciences: Edwards Minimally Invasive Haemodynamic Monitoring Award and Edwards Nursing Science Award.

Edwards Minimally Invasive Haemodynamic Monitoring Award. The proposed research must focus on developing new knowledge related to minimally invasive haemodynamic monitoring in intensive care and emergency medicine. Proposals should be centred on the evaluation, use or development of technologies and devices likely to improve non-invasive haemodynamic assessment of the critically ill. The scope of the proposal is not limited to patient monitors and may include any kind of biomedical device with haemodynamic monitoring capacities. Proposed research must have intrinsic importance, but may also contain a component for permitting the applicant to learn the methodology, theory, and conceptualisations necessary for developing into an outstanding independent researcher.

The Edwards Minimally Invasive Haemodynamic Monitoring Award allocates a grant amounting to 20 000€.

Edwards Nursing Science Award. The proposed research must focus on developing new knowledge related to nursing and physiotherapy in intensive care and emergency medicine. Proposals should be centred on the evaluation, use or development of protocols or research programmes likely to improve patient care in the ICU. The scope of the proposal is not limited to patient haemodynamic monitors and may include any aspect of patient care. Proposed research must have intrinsic importance, but may also contain a component for permitting the applicant to learn the methodology, theory, and conceptualisations necessary for developing research programmes in nursing or physiotherapy.

The Edwards Nursing Science Award allocates a grant amounting to 5 000€.
