Activities

With the beginning of the next term positions of MENN have been switched with Michael Joannidis acting as chairman and Jean-Charles Preiser as deputy for the following three years.
The dynamism and influence of the section MENN is growing within ESICM ! Take a look at our activities:

  1. The section MENN shows constant activity in the areas of research as well as continuing education. This is mirrored by the fact no less 15 session during the annual congress 2006 in Barcelona were organized by the MENN section (8 thematic sessions, 2 competency sessions, 1 continuing professional development session, 1 clinical challenge session and 3 industry sponsored sessions).
  2. Also 94 scientific abstracts submitted to the MENN section indicate growing scientific interest in this field.
  3. The host program “ESICM-ESPEN (European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism)” resulting in joint session at the ESICM meetings with reciprocity to the invitation of ESPEN to ESICM has become a successful constant relationship between the two societies.
  4. Three research groups, namely TOS, Nutrition and Metabolism and Critical Nephrology show high activity resulting in interesting projects like the Glucontrol study (coordinator Jean-Charles Preiser). New members with proposals for new projects have joined. Also, participation into surveys related to nutrition in ICUs over Europe are under discussion. These surveys are planned together with the next “Nutrition Day in Europe”, next January 25th, 2007.
  5. Lately, growing interest in the area of Critical Care Nephrology can be observed. Acute renal injury is a highly clinical relevant issue for critically ill patients associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Classification and as well clinical management of this syndrome are major issues of the CCN working group resulting in expert workshops held and active participation in an internationally established platform called the Acute Kidney Injury Network (AKIN).
Interested members are welcome to join the MENN section as well as any of the respective working groups. The next section meeting will be held during the ISICEM 2007 in Brussels.
