THE ESICM SECTIONS: HOW IT WORKS
Who are we? The Society has formed Sections to develop and manage its scientific activities. The main task of the Sections will be to provide the Congress Committee with the expertise within specific fields, especially maintain the list of abstract reviewers for the annual congresses and the design of the scientific programme of the Annual Congress and other meetings and conferences. The Sections will also provide representatives who will form the Research Committee
Each member may belong to several Sections, but may vote only in one :This selection will be indicated annually in conjunction with the membership renewal. It can also be updated at any time on line (see Membership/My data)
The voting members of each Section elect one representative to the Congress Committee, another to the Research Committee and a third one to the Council. The Brussels Office will organise both the call for candidates and the postal ballot. The mandate of each position is 3 years renewable once.
The Sections will hold at least an annual meeting in conjunction with the ESICM Annual Congress.
If the membership of a Section falls below 25 for two consecutive years, it will no more be represented in the Division of Scientific Affairs, nor in the Council. The purpose of this is to guarantee a representation of the main interests of the membership in the Division of Scientific Affairs, and at the same time respond to the potential shifts in the areas of interest; i.e. if the activity of any Section declines substantially; it will not continue to be automatically represented in the Division of Scientific Affairs, nor in the Council, neither in the Research Committee.
For the future new Sections, a proposal should be made to the Executive Committee, supported by a minimum of 25 voting members, who will be ready to join the new Section. Once the proposal has been reviewed by the Executive Committee, the Executive Committee will bring the proposal of the new Section to the Council for approval/rejection. This is necessary in order to avoid too much overlap and keep a balanced structure.
