EUROPEAN DIPLOMA IN INTENSIVE CARE MEDICINE (EDIC)EDIC OBJECTIVESTo promote quality standards in education and in ICM in Europe and elsewhere. The awarding of a speciality exam in intensive care medicine is a key component of the strategy. Many jurisdictions specify EDIC as a professional qualification in ICM and the increasing numbers sitting the exam also attests to its widening acceptance. Responsibility for the European Diploma in Intensive Care Medicine (EDIC) belongs with the Education and Training Committee and its EDIC subcommittee, under the leadership of Hans Flaatten (Bergen, Norway).
HistoryThe first EDIC exam took place in Baveno in 1989 with a total of 40 candidates. In Amsterdam 2003, the number sitting EDIC topped 100 candidates and now over 300 candidates take the exam annually. The increasing numbers taking the exam and requests to broaden the accessibility to EDIC Part 1 has resulted in a decision to hold EDIC at additional venues other than at the ESICM Annual Congress. It can now be taken in Bern/Switzerland, in Ede/Netherlands (in association with an NVIC educational meeting) and in Kuala Lumpur/Malaysia.

People who have failed the written exam must wait at least one year prior to being able to resit the written exam again.
Oral examinationRegistrations for EDIC part II (oral/clinical) are closed now. Candidates who are waiting for their final date in October/November will be informed by email very soon.
Examination fees
Exam fees, less 10% administrative costs, will be reimbursed only if the ESICM is notified at least 4 weeks prior to the exam date. Refunds will not be given thereafter or be transferred to another exam date.
ESICM will send invoices to the candidates after approval of their applications for the written/or oral examinations. 21% Belgian VAT is included in the above mentioned fees.
HOW TO PREPARE YOURSELF FOR THE EXAMWe advise you to draw fully on: - training opportunities at a local and national level - our Annual Congresses with its 11 Educational interactive sessions and its pre-congress courses, including the new ICM Refresher Course - the PACT programme - Critical Care exam course in Cardiff, United Kingdom (8 September 2008).

This second workshop will take place in the Vila Galé on Wednesday 24 and Thursday 25 September 2008 during our Annual Congress in Lisbon.
Information for participants: * for the faculty members: an extra-night will be reserved for you in the faculty hotel. * for the non-faculty members: please book your hotel via the congress site. The ESICM will reimburse you for the cost of the hotel for the Wednesday night after the congress.

The EDIC subcommittee favours exam centralisation as a mechanism of improving quality and harmonising the exam process. Exam reports are key to the Subcommittees audit process. The format of the exam is always evolving and improving. An ongoing collaborative venture with the Swiss authorities (http://www.swiss-icu.ch/) is resulting in a common Part 1 exam, utilising aspects of both body's traditional exam. The 2007 autumn exam was a joint venture, with a separate additional specific paediatric module for Swiss candidates seeking eligibility to sit the Swiss Part 2 exam.
