STRUCTURE AND ORGANISATION OF ESICM
There are 4 main levels which characterise the functioning of the Society
- The General Membership
- The Council
- The Divisions
- The Executive Committee
Organisation Chart - 24 KB
The Organisation chart illustrates the relationship and interactivity of these four levels.
General Membership.
Most of the active members are organised in Sections gathering members with a common interest in a specific topic of intensive care medicine. The nurses and allied healthcare professionals elect the N&AHP Committee
active at several levels of the organisation. The President elect is also elected by the entire membership.
The Council includes the national representatives elected by the members of the corresponding countries.
The Divisions gather several committees and subcommittees and organise the interactivity between these.
The Executive Committee directs the daily activities and conducts the routine business of the Association.
ESICM: THE STATUTES
THE STATUTES of the Association consists of an official document that has been discussed within the Executive Committee and the Council, and voted by the General Assembly. It is remitted to the Geneva and Swiss Ministry of Finances, and published in the Belgian Official Journal.
The first Statutes have been written in March 1982 at the foundation meeting that has been held in Geneva at the WHO (World Health Organisation). Thereafter, the Statutes have been amended in November 1988, in September 1991, in June 1993, in June 1994, in March 1996, in September 1998, and in October 2003. The last version is available here.
Statutes: October 2003 - 45 KB
The last amendments have permitted the Society to implement the restructuring of the Association with the aim to organise its activities in a more professional and structured way. The creation of the Divisions is one essential element of this evolution. The Membership classes have also been modified in order to clarify the rights and duties of each class. The Council has been extended to the Sections and the N&AHP Committee in addition to the national representatives. All mandates will last for three years, in some cases renewable once; except that the president elect (and subsequently the president) is elected for 2 years.
THE ESICM STRUCTURE
THE EUROPEAN SOCIETY OF INTENSIVE CARE MEDICINE has implemented new Statutes in October 2003. The amendments mainly consisted of adapting the Membership Classes and organising the different committees and groups within an efficient and logical structure. The Society's Organisation chart includes all the details of the flows between the general membership, the Sections, the Council, the Divisions and the Executive.
THERE ARE THREE DIVISIONS
CHAIRMANSHIP Each Division and each Committee is led by an elected Chairman seconded by an elected Deputy. Their mandate lasts 3 years non renewable. All are elected by the Council. The candidates must fulfil a job description prepared by the Executive Committee and the Council. All elected officers take office at the General Assembly during the ESICM Annual Congress in September/October.
BRUSSELS OFFICE The Brussels Office staff is responsible for the daily work related to all the Society's activities in general. Actually, the Brussels Office is composed of 8 employees.
